Ziggy Nail Art

Today’s post is pretty special. Today is my mom’s birthday, and I NEVER know what to get her. She’s one of those people that if you ask what she wants, she’ll tell you that she doesn’t want or need anything. I do believe I nailed it this year, though. If there’s one thing I know she loves, it’s our dog, Ziggy. I decided to buy a canvas and some child safe (dog safe) finger paints, and let Ziggy take care of the rest.

That painting and the little artist was the inspiration for my nails.

I attempted to recreate his masterpiece by painting all of my nails white, then diluted some polish and went at it with a detail brush. The polishes used include: NYC – French White Tip, Finger Paints – Scenery Greenery, Pure Ice – French Kiss, Sinful Colors – Unicorn, Sinful Colors – Boogie Nights, and Wet N Wild – Black Crème. To recreate the matte effect of a canvas, I topped my non-accent nails off with two coats of Hard Candy – Matte-ly In Love (this polish is kind of streaky).

For my ring finger, I used NYC – French White Tip as my base, and then I used acrylic paint for his face.

This is the picture I used for reference (and yes- he does always have his tongue sticking out! haha!:

It wasn’t until now did I realize why I had taken this photo- For cosmetology, we had to create a portfolio, and one of the requirements was that we needed a “creative hair colour.” My friend that offered to let me temporarily colour his hair bailed on me, so my mom let me do hers. As a joke, I also put this photo of Ziggy in there too and labeled it “creative fur colour.” My teacher had a good laugh! And before anyone goes and says I abuse animals, just know that I don’t. He was/is perfectly fine :)

This was his work of art:

My mom didn’t expect me to get her anything, so she was stunned when I pulled out a wrapped box. She gave me a disapproving look, saying I shouldn’t have gotten her anything, but once she opened it, she was delighted. She loves it, and the only complaint she has is it’s too small. haha! She thinks it would make a great wall mural. haha!

Thanks for reading as always!

Edgar Allan Poe Nails

I wasn’t feeling the whole traditional Halloween nails this week, so I decided to go for Poe nails. I’d say it’s pretty perfect timing, too, because The Raven movie is coming out soon, which is based off of Poe’s work. These nails were inspired by Edgar, himself, and The Raven.

DSCN1196

I used Pure Ice – Kiss Me Here on my index fingers, then used a Stripe Rite striper in black to create a raven in a tree silhouette. For my ring fingers I used 2-3 coats of Sally Hansen – Pure White Tip, and tried to replicate a picture of Poe with my striper. I used a white Stripe Rite striper to make thin white lines around his jaw, so show that it was a shadow, and not a thick line by mistake. For the rest of my nails I used 3-4 coats of New York Color – Sidewalkers, and placed large grey and small red hexagon glitters along my tips.

I hope you all enjoyed these nails! I’m pretty pleased with them! This is only the second time I attempted to paint a person on my nails, aside from my Seether nails.

Do you think this was a fun Halloween(ish) mani?

4th of July Nails

Today’s challenge, for day 28, was to create nails inspired by a flag. I actually wanted to create nails for a country other than the country I live in, but I thought I would get into the festivities of the Fourth of July :)

Index finger: I applied 2 coats of Wet n Wild- Red Red, and added red, white, and blue star spangles (see comparison at the end of the post), going from top to bottom.

Middle finger: I painted my middle finger white (L.A. Colors – Energy Source), and used L.A. Colors – Live (silver), Pure Ice –French Kiss (blue), and Wet n Wild – Red Red (red) for the dry marble.

Ring finger: I painted my nail white and used a detail brush to make a small blue square (Pure Ice – French Kiss). I then used my detail brush again to make red stripes (some of them were a bit messy, so I used a white Stripe Rite striper to even them out a bit). I then placed small silver hexagons to the blue area to represent the stars. By the way- I didn’t actually count the stripes as I made them, but once I was done, I counted and actually ended up with 13!! Crazy :D

Pinky and Thumb: I painted my nails with Orly – Rock Solid, and then used a silver (L.A. Colors Art Deco – Silver + Color Club Art Club – Fine Silver), red (L.A. Colors Art Deco – Red Glitter), and blue (L.A. Colors Art Deco – Blue Glitter) striper to create fireworks.

Okay, you may call me a liar because the star spangles don’t look like the colors I said they were, but trust me- they are :)

The white looks like it is purple/pink, but here is a comparison. It looks purple/pink because of the pretty film put on top of them :)

The blue also doesn’t look blue, but here is a better comparison between the pink, white and blue spangles (in that order):

Also, the red doesn't look red; it looks more like a dark pink, but here is a comparison between the red and dark pink:

Sorry if that was a confusing post! Writing all of the different polishes and stripers was confusing to me! Here are all of the polishes I used today: (maybe the picture will clarify my confusing wording)

Have a great day! See you tomorrow for nails inspired by the supernatural…

Autism Awareness Gumball Nails

I think these nails are the perfect end to autism awareness month. I must say that I am a little saddened that this is the last full week of April, because I will miss this challenge. It really was a challenge trying to come up with different ideas each week, and one design didn’t come out as I had hoped (see end of post). I’m sure I will be doing more autism nails next year.

Again, most people would just believe that these nails are ordinary dots, but the idea came from the traditional autism awareness colors. No, this was not inspired by Wonder bread. I thought that it looked a lot like Wonder bread until I added the light blue. Now it’s not too bad…

102_2505

I used Red Red from Wet n Wild, French Kiss from Pure Ice, Mellow Yellow and Blew Me Away from Sally Hansen.

Here are my failed nails:

102_2456

I suppose they don’t look that bad in the photo, but they were not satisfying to me at all. I had to add a ton of layers to make it opaque, but that didn’t work very well anyway. After all of the layers it bubbled up a lot, especially at the very tips.

I’m liking my new nail length. They’re so… fresh? They’re also super square now, which I love!

Autism Awareness Swirls nails

I think a lot of people believe there is only an autism awareness day, but there is actually a whole month dedicated to autism awareness. Yep, you guessed it- that month is this month!
102_2464
I know that the autism symbol is a puzzle piece, but these nails were inspired by the traditional colors of autism (dark blue, light blue, yellow, and red) and this bracelet.
102_2460
I love that none of them are uniform! They are also really simple! I painted a thick coat of yellow on my nail and added a drop of each color, took a toothpick and swirled it all around.
102_2462
With only one day of wearing this design, I’ve received a lot of compliments! Every time someone commented on them, I had to hurry up and push my sleeve up so they could see my matching bracelet. I also wanted them to know the reason for this design.
102_2468
I used:
  • Blue Me Away! – Sally Hansen
  • Red Red – Wet n Wild
  • French Kiss – Pure Ice
  • Mellow Yellow – Sally Hansen

Icy Nails

I did these nails in December. Of course I didn’t have a blog then, so I just took pictures for future reference, so this was the only decent quality one I had.

102_1971

They are super easy to create: I painted my nails a sheer blue, then once dry I sponged the rest onto the tips (you can’t really tell that I sponged it in the picture). To finish it off, I applied some topcoat and added large blue (dark and light) hexagons. I also added some small blue hexagon glitters.

102_2145

The blue I used was Splash from Pure Ice.
